Creation Is Creating A Vision You Have While Being Clueless About How
As a creator, the moment you try something new—
a new offer, a new idea, a new direction—
Fear shows up.
Cluelessness shows up.
Unpredictability shows up.
They don’t ask for permission.
They just come along.
It’s like a shadow when the sun shines on you.
The brighter the vision, the sharper the shadow.
And here’s the part most creators waste energy on:
Trying to get rid of it.
That’s a dumb waste of energy.
Because when you walk an unknown path, half the time you won’t know what you’re doing.
You’ll feel like you’re playing blind.
And that’s not a bug.
It’s the process.
The problem isn’t cluelessness.
The problem is being surprised by it.
The Mind Games That Drain Creators
When you don’t expect the clueless phase, your mind starts playing games.
It whispers:
- Who do you think you are?
- You’re not capable of this.
- This isn’t working.
- Other people are ahead of you.
We call it imposter syndrome.
Limited beliefs.
Fear of failure.
Different labels. Same mechanism.
It’s just the brain trying to protect you from uncertainty.
But if you accept that cluelessness is part of creation?
The ride becomes adventurous instead of threatening.
You keep walking ahead in spite of it, not in the absence of it.
And that’s the hack.
A Lesson That Changed Everything
When I was 20, working on my demo reel as a lighting artist to apply to VFX companies, I had a mentor who completely changed how I approached growth.
I would ask him endless questions.
He rarely gave straight answers.
Instead, he would ask:
“Why do you think that is?”
“I want you to give me an answer.”
He didn’t train me by giving solutions.
He trained me to think.
When he reviewed my work, I’d look for approval.
He would glance at it… and walk away.
Sometimes all he said was:
“Keep kicking your hands and legs. You’ll figure it out.”
And he would leave.
At first, it frustrated me.
Later, it freed me.
It forced me to:
- Stop chasing approval
- Raise my own quality standards
- Embrace not knowing
That’s when I understood:
Most of creation is playing blind.
And that’s okay.
The Creator’s Acceptance Shift
When you accept you’ll be clueless:
- You stop panicking when something doesn’t work.
- You undo and restart without ego.
- You detach from “failure.”
- You see everything as process.
There is no failure.
There is only iteration.
As a creator, your life must be simplified around creation.
You cannot afford to fight the same mental battles every time you attempt something bold.
There is no single “right way.”
You make the way.
You are make-doing.
The Creator Resilience Framework
1. Expect the Clueless Phase
Before starting anything new, tell yourself: “I will not know what I’m doing for a while.” Normalizing it removes emotional shock.
2. Separate Fear from Facts
When the mind says, “You’re not capable,” ask: What’s the evidence? Most fear-based thoughts collapse under inspection.
3. Replace Approval with Standards
Instead of asking, “Is this good enough?” ask, “Does this meet my standard?” Shift validation inward.
4. Iterate Without Drama
If something isn’t working, undo it. Start from scratch. No emotional narrative. Just process.
5. Stay in Motion
Like my mentor said — keep kicking your hands and legs. Momentum builds clarity. Stagnation feeds doubt.
6. Define Success as Persistence
Your only real job is not to stop. As long as you keep creating, you’re winning.
The Big Picture
According to Andrew Huberman, uncertainty activates stress responses in the brain.
But here’s the key:
If you interpret uncertainty as danger → cortisol spikes, creativity drops.
If you interpret uncertainty as challenge → dopamine rises, motivation increases.
Meaning:
The story you attach to “I don’t know what I’m doing” determines your performance.
Cluelessness + fear story = paralysis.
Cluelessness + growth story = expansion.
Your nervous system adapts based on repetition.
The more you create in uncertainty without quitting, the more your baseline confidence rises.
Your Next Move:
As a creator:
Fear will come.
Cluelessness will come.
Mind games will come.
They are shadows of ambition.
Stop trying to eliminate them.
Expect them.
Walk anyway.
There is no single path to your vision.
You make it up as you go.
And as long as you keep kicking your hands and legs—
You will find a way.
Always.
